The Barrel Helm

The large barrel-shaped helmet of the 13th century. It enclosed the head and at first, the only opening was the ocularium, or vision slit. Later extra breathing holes were added in the lower part. The barrel helm was worn over a light helmet or hood of mail. The entire weight rested on the head and it was only worn when actually fighting.
